Senior citizen, grandson killed in gun attack

A SENIOR citizen and his grandson were killed in a daylight gun attack in an east coast village of Zamboanga City on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Zamboanga City Police Station 2 (ZCPS2) identified the fatalities as Rolando Tumambid, 78, a farmer, and his 17-year-old grandson, Marjon Bergino, also a farmer.

The incident occurred around 11:12 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, in Purok 7, Calabasa village, located 54 kilometers east of Zamboanga City Hall.

Investigation revealed that before the attack, the victims were on a motorcycle, searching for a Xerox machine to photocopy Tumambid's senior citizen identification card. As they rode home, with Bergino driving, unidentified suspects on another motorcycle appeared and repeatedly shot them.

Police stated the victims died instantly.

The suspects fled the scene immediately after the crime.

Authorities recovered 12 empty shells from an M-16 Armalite Rifle at the crime scene.

Investigation continues to determine the motive and identities of the suspects. (SunStar Zamboanga)
