
ZAMBOANGA City is targeting to plant 12,000 native tree seedlings in line with observance 2025 Arbor Day on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
The Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) said Tuesday, June 24, that the massive-tree planting activity also dubbed as the "Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga" is in Lumayang, an upland village, 12.85 kilometers east of Zamboanga City Hall.
OCENR said the tree seedlings to be planted include 7,000 Narra, 4,000 Nato and 1,000 Palo Maria, to support the sustainability of the protected watershed zone.
If the full target is planted on Wednesday, June 25, Zamboanga City will reach a cumulative total of 1,045,221 seedlings planted across 700.35 hectares.
OCENR said the annual initiative is pursuant to Ordinance 281, which promotes public participation in reforestation and ecosystem conservation.
A short program will be held at the Biodiversity Monitoring System (BMS) Area, followed by the tree-planting proper at 7 a.m. in Sitio Brea, Lumayang, situated within the Asean Heritage Park Watershed Area.
The activity will bring together representatives from national and city government agencies, civic groups, private sector partners, uniformed personnel and other stakeholders. (SunStar Zamboanga)
