5.2-magnitude quake rocks Luzon

(UPDATED) - A 5.2 magnitude tectonic earthquake struck Luzon at 5:46 p.m. Sunday, June 17.

The quake, centered near San Felipe town in Zambales, was felt at Intensity IV in San Felipe. It had a depth of focus of 20 kilometers, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Based on the Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale, an Intensity IV quake is moderately strong with a vibration comparable to the passing of heavy trucks.

The quake was also felt at Intensity III in Cainta, Rizal and Intensity II in the cities of Quezon, Pasay, Pasig and Mandaluyong in Metro Manila.

Instrumental intensity II was reported in Olongapo City, Zambales; Guagua, Pampanga; and Marikina City. Instrumental Intensity I was also reported in Muntinlupa City, Pasig City, and Tagaytay City.

Phivolcs, in an advisory, said it doees not expect damage from the quake, although aftershocks may be expected.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), meanwhile, reported the earthquake at 5.5 magnitude and centered near San Nicolas, Philippines, with a depth of focus of 34 kilometers. (SunStar Philippines)
