MANILA -- The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday said it will be suspending classes in pre-school, elementary, and high school in the National Capital Region by noontime due to the heavy rains brought by Typhoon Juan (international codename: Megi).

The announcement was posted in its official Twitter account (@DepEd_PH), which was launched Monday after the department received numerous calls regarding the suspension of classes.

The directive was issued by Department of Education-NCR Regional Director Elena Ruiz after a meeting with education officials Tuesday morning.

Storm signal number 1 is still up in the capital as of this posting.

In Marikina City, classes in colleges and universities were also cancelled due to heavy rains. Authorities have been monitoring the water level at the Marikina River.

The education department also said classes in all levels in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, and the Cordillera Administrative Region were still suspended.

Classes in Calabarzon, however, were resumed Tuesday.

There is also no work in government offices, particularly in northern Luzon provinces that were hit by Juan.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the typhoon is spotted at 190 kilometers southwest of Laoag City and is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by afternoon. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
