Garbage collection delayed due impassable bridge at landfill

By Merlinda A. Pedrosa

The collection of garbage in various barangays in Bacolod City will be delayed due to the impassable road and bridge towards the city’s sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa, Ma. Fe Trespuentes, officer-in-charge of the Department of Public Services (DPS), said Tuesday, August 29.

Trespuentes said heavy rains due to typhoon Goring damaged the road and bridge going to the sanitary landfill since Monday, August 27.

“The city’s garbage hauler IPM-Construction and Development Corporation (IPM-CDC) cannot penetrate to collect the garbage since some of their workers were also affected by floods,” she said.

She added the garbage collectors failed to report because they also prioritized their families who were affected by floods.

Trespuentes noted that they tried their best to collect the garbage in critical areas Tuesday like in the downtown area, and markets.

She said that the IPM-CDC will conduct a special operation in the critical areas to collect the garbage.

She said the IPM-CDC will deploy at least 12 big dump trucks to collect the garbage since they can penetrate going the sanitary landfill.

“For now, we cannot mobilize the small trucks of the IPM-CDC because they cannot penetrate inside the sanitary landfill,” she added.

Trespuentes noted that even Barangay Felisa also experienced the worst flood since Monday.

Trespuentes also urged the residents to avoid dumping their garbage on the road to avoid floods.*
