Keeping 'Misa de Gallo' safe amid pandemic

Carla N. Canet

CATHOLICS observe the health protocol when attending the Misa De Gallo (Shepherd's mass) to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.

It is part of the Filipino tradition to attend these masses which run for nine days starting December 16 and ending December 24.

The one-meter distance and wearing of face masks are a must inside and outside of the church premises that stretches in the community as police officers and tanods make sure that everyone is observing the health protocol.

Church leaders and servers prepare the church compound for those who could not be accommodated inside the church.

Chairs are being provided outside so that the attendees can use them while attending the mass.

Police visibility exists in all churches to ensure compliance of the health protocols versus Covid-19 pandemic.

Even with the conduct of communion, all Catholics are urged to receive the communion using their palm to prevent the traditional means of receiving it through the mouth.

The essence of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ is being strengthened despite the constraints caused by the Covid-19 as the people will continue to attend masses despite the threat.

Rev. Fr. Rene Gaylon, the priest of Our Lady of Holy Rosary Parish, Alangilan, Bacolod City, who officiates the nine-day mass along with other Catholic priests, imparts the value of having a listening heart and mind especially now that the world is in disarray not just because of the Covid-19 pandemic but also the typical complexity of daily lives.

By having a listening heart and mind, there will be more problems to be deciphered than just responding to them with emotions.

He urges the Catholics attending the mass to complete the nine-day Misa de Gallo as the nicest direction to honor the birth of Jesus Christ as he wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
