Baby who fell from hanging bridge dies

Erwin P. Nicavera

THE five-month-old girl who was among the eight persons injured after falling into the river from the hanging bridge in Sitio Camugao in Barangay 6 in Kabankalan City died.

Elbert Javellana, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), said the baby died while being treated at the hospital.

Javellana recalled that the baby fell from the 20-meter high bridge along with her mother.

They were among those who are watching the fluvial parade as part of the Sinulog de Kabankalan Festival celebration on Sunday, January 19.

Some of the cables snapped, causing some of the residents standing on one side of the bridge to fall.

“The mother lost hold of the baby, who was found under the water by some rescuers minutes after they fell,” he said, adding that the baby was still alive when rushed to the hospital but she later died on Monday, January 20.

The CDRRMO has yet to coordinate with the mother as to the cause of the baby's death.

All other victims who suffered minor injuries are now safe.

Mayor Pedro Zayco earlier said the City Government will extend assistance to them.

The mayor ordered the closure of the hanging bridge. A nearby bridge now caters to residents and motorists.
