THE City Government of Bacolod is planning to rehabilitate the electrical connections inside the three major public markets in the city.

Councilor Bartolome Orola, chairperson of the City Council committee on markets, said on Thursday, February 21, he will coordinate with the City Engineer’s Office to inspect the electric connections in these markets to prevent fire incidents.

“We should rehabilitate not only the public market buildings but also the electrical connections inside the Burgos, Libertad, and Central public markets for the safety of everybody,” he said.

He added the CEO should determine if the electrical connections of the vendors are properly installed.

On February 15, a fire destroyed 65 blocks and left an estimated damage of P58 million worth of properties inside the Manapla public market.

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the fire started from the ceiling of a food stall due to overheating which also led to an electrical short circuit.

“We should not wait that this will happen to us. We should exert more efforts to avoid similar incident and our preparation for the Fire Prevention Month in March,” Orola said.

He said he will task the CEO to ensure there will be no illegal electrical connections inside the public markets. (MAP)
