THE renovations of the three major public markets in Bacolod City are expected to be completed in July or August 2022.

Executive Assistant Ernie Pineda, cluster head on markets, said the renovations at Libertad South, Central and Burgos North public markets are still ongoing and some of the affected vendors were temporarily transferred outside the streets.

At the Burgos North Public Market, the renovation of the vegetables section is expected to be finished in July, Pineda said, adding that the reconstruction of some portions of the other two markets is expected to be completed in August.

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) earlier approved the request of Mayor Evelio Leonardia for a P150-million financial assistance to fund the improvement and rehabilitation of the three major public markets.

The budget will be divided equally for the development of Libertad Public Market, Central Market and Burgos Public Market.

Leonardia earlier said the P150-million assistance will be a substantial investment in the city’s three major markets to counter the unprecedented devastating health and economic consequences or impact of coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

He said the primary purposes of the projects are to meet sanitation standards, protect public health and restore economic prosperity.
