A RETIRED policeman was injured after he was allegedly shot by his partner, who also shot herself, at their house in Barangay Poblacion in Toboso, Negros Occidental Monday morning, July 9.

Wounded were retired Senior Police Officer 2 Leonilo Garcia, 55, and partner Merlita Carredo, 52, both of the said village.

Chief Inspector Joery Puerto, town police chief, said Garcia was inside their bathroom when his partner entered and suddenly shot him, hitting his right leg.

He startled but he was able to run and reached the police station via a tricycle.

Garcia reported the incident to the police and even brought himself to the hospital in Sagay City.

Police responded and found Carredo lying on the ground with blood after she allegedly shot herself in the chest.

Carredo was rushed to a hospital and was later transferred to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City. She is in a stable condition now.

Police recovered from the scene a .9mm caliber, two fired bullets, two live ammunition, and a magazine of the same firearm.

Puerto said there was no verbal altercation or commotion that happened between the couple before the incident happened.

"Carredo attacked Garcia after learning the latter's alleged affair with another woman," Puerto said.

A day prior to the incident, a woman filed a complaint against Carredo following their confrontation, Puerto said.

Puerto said they have yet to determine the owner of the gun.

They are also waiting for Garcia's decision for the filing of charges.

Garcia was previously assigned to Toboso Municipal Police Station before he retired from the police service through optional retirement in 2016.
