Some 300 to 500 minors with comorbidities in Negros Occidental are targeted by the provincial government to be inoculated against coronavirus disease (Covid-19) at Teresita Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City today, October 29.

Provincial Administrator lawyer Rayfrando Diaz II said this will mark the launching of the province’s Covid-19 pediatrics vaccination program.

The pediatrics vaccination covers 12 to 17 years old with comorbidities, Diaz said, adding that Pfizer vaccine will be administered to them.

Earlier, various local government units (LGUs) in the province were asked to register those who are qualified for the pediatrics vaccination program.

The list was then submitted to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

"We made a representation with the Department of Health (DOH) and we will participate in the pediatrics vaccination," he said.

After the launching, the pediatrics vaccination will continue, he said.

Additional hospitals like the Cadiz and Lorenzo Zayco District Hospitals will also be used as venues for the vaccination.

Diaz explained that the city and municipal health offices all over the province have already been informed of the DOH’s uniform guidelines on the program such as requiring minors of medical certificates to prove their existing illness.

In finalizing the guidelines, the DOH is ensuring that consent by the parent or guardian of the child prior to vaccination will be obtained.

Also, it is ensuring the supply availability of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and other vaccines with emergency use authorization for 12 to 17 years old issued by the Philippine Food and Drug Administration.

The agency also stressed that there should be an equitable access to medical clearance by a physician for children with comorbidities.*
