MANILA -- Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 in Pasay City has been named by an interactive travel website as the "worst airport in Asia."
The best and worst airports for sleeping in or long transit list was released Monday by "The Guide to Sleeping in Airports" website, which gathers reviews from travelers around the world.
It listed the Philippines' premier airport as the worst in Asia, while Singapore's Changi Airport has been named as the best airport in the world followed by Seoul and Hong Kong.
"With its collapsing ceilings, overcrowding, rampant bribery, and taxi drivers scamming travelers on fares, it's easy to understand why 'disappointed' and 'unbelievable' are just a few of the words travelers use to describe Manila's Terminal 1," the website said.
"Travelers continue to complain about the long and numerous queues that begin outside the terminal. Once inside, there will be no time for naps and certainly no place for quiet rest and enjoyment as you'll be busy going through various queues for the next few hours as you proceed to your gate," it added.
Last year, the same website tagged NAIA 1 as the world's worst airport.
The negative reviews have prompted government authorities to rehabilitate the airport, which is named after the martyred father and namesake of President Benigno Aquino III.
But the website said it sees no improvement in corruption in NAIA 1 and other problems such as long lines, insufficient seating, delays in baggage and poor quality restaurants.
In reaction to the list, Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the government will always be cognizant of the concerns of the travelers, especially on the physical aspect.
"We are certainly continuing to rehabilitate the NAIA. The rehabilitation plans are being reviewed right now. There are engineering details that need to be finalized and approved," he said.
Aside from NAIA, other airports that made it to the "worst" list include: Los Angeles airport in North America, Rome Fiumicino in Europe, Jeddah airport in Middle East, Lagos airport in Africa, and Caracas and Tonga in South America and South Pacific, respectively.
