In the past days, women around the country launched a #BabaeAko campaign following the continuous insults and demeaning statements of President Rodrigo Duterte against them.

This also branded the macho President as misogynist considering his tirades against the women leaders in the country.

Among these women leaders are Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo, and former chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, whom he considered as an enemy of the state.

Recently, the President came under fire (again) after he said that the next Ombudsman will not be a woman, as he set particular qualities for the subsequent head.

Duterte said he wants “someone whose integrity people believe in. Of course, it could not be a politician, especially not a woman.”

Earlier, the President also directed the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to shoot rebels in the vagina to render them useless, a statement that doesn’t sit well with the women and advocates.

Duterte had also catcalled a female reporter during a press conference.

With Duterte’s strong prejudiced against women, individuals, and groups launched on Sunday, May 20, a campaign on social media against the President’s misogynistic behavior.

Women in the country posted videos of themselves with a message to Duterte. It ended with a line, “lalaban ako (I will fight back).”

They also use the hashtag #BabaeAko (I am a woman) on their videos.

Some of the women who joined the social media campaign were former Social Welfare secretary Judy Taguiwalo and seasoned journalist Inday Espina-Varona.
