Hidilyn Diaz to skip SEA Games opening

RIO Olympics silver medalist and 2018 Asian Games gold titlist Hidilyn Diaz will be out of the opening ceremony of the 30th Southeast Asian Games on November 30, 2019, at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

This was disclosed by Monico Puentevella, president of the Samahang ng Weightlifting sa Pilipinas.

Puentevella said Diaz's absence at the opening rites will ensure her of performing at her best when the competition begins on December 2 at the historical Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

"It's an honor to be part of the opening ceremony but, we want the gold medal. And, we want to thank everyone for the understanding," he added.

Earlier, Puentevella said they are looking at 4 of the 10 gold medals at stake in this event. "No promises, but we'll try our best," he added.

Aside from Diaz, Puentevella also expects Nestor Colonia, a Rio Olympian, and a World Championship bronze medalist, to co-deliver the expected gold medals for the country.

Also expected to lift the gold medals for the Philippines are Elreen Ann Ando and Kristel Macrohon.

The other members of the national team are John Fabuar Ceniza (55kg), Dave Lloyd Pacaldo (61kg), Jeffrey Garcia (73kg), Mary Flor Diaz (45kg), Ellen Rose Perez (49kg) and Margaret Colonia (59kg).
