Gabutan falters in China

FORMER WBO oriental bantamweight champion Dayer Gabutan suffered another sorry loss in China Thursday evening, January 17.

Gabutan squared off against Ge An Ma for the WBA Asia super bantamweight title in City Stadium, Diaobingshan, China but lost via unanimous decision.

The fighting pride of Besa, Mountain province was coming off an eight month layoff were he also lost to ZongLi He last year for the vacant World Boxing Council Asian Boxing Council Silver super flyweight title via unanimous decision.

Prior to his defeat to He, Gabutan scored a second round technical knockout against Roilo Golez in La Trinidad on September 2017.

Although Gabutan has become a fulltime student, the former six time bantamweight champion said he remained active at the Highland Boxing Gym by sparring with his teammates.

Gabutan also lost five out of his six fights from 2013 to 2016.

The 30-year-old Ambagiw, Besao native won the vacant WBO Oriental bantamweight title via unanimous decision against Jilo Merlin and defended the title six times from 2010 to 2012.

MA on the other hand improved his record to 6–0 since turning pro in 2017 while Gabutan fell to 20-8–3.
