A DOCTOR in Iligan City tagged by police as member of progressive group Bayan Muna was arrested for alleged violation of Republic Act 9262 otherwise known as Violation against Women and Children Act (VAWC).

The doctor identified as Charles Rainer Marquez, 40, a resident of Barangay Tubod, Iligan City, was arrested while attending a concert at a mall in Cagayan de Oro City, Friday, November 15.

Police Major Abogado Mautin, chief of Iligan City Police Station 4, said the court sets his bail amounting to P72,000.

Mautin also identified Marquez as an alleged “leftist and a recruiter of the youth in a university in Iligan City for health-related rallies.”

He said Marquez is a member of Bayan Muna party-list.

But Mautin clarified that he is charged for a complaint filed by his former girlfriend, not for his association with Bayan Muna.

“Dili nato siya ma-charge kay wala po sa batas na ma charge siya sa pag recruit niya sa mga youth para mag-join ng rallies and demonstrations, parang freedom of expression and peaceful rallies ang iyang gi-organize. Although member siya ng Bayan Muna party-list, we cannot conclude yet na active member siya sa pikas kay puro medical and health concern lang siya active,” he said.
