Oro Kalimpyo Awards 2018 launched

The City Government of Cagayan de Oro launched the 2nd Oro Kalimpyo Awards, a city-wide search for most outstanding villages that are implementing the ecological solid waste management (ESWM).

The launching was set during the Barangay Summit on solid waste management at the Deluxe Hotel attended by barangay officials on Thursday, August 23.

The award has three categories: urban, suburban, and hinterland categories.

According to Solid Waste Management division head Elvisa Mabelin, the search aims to raise awareness on the importance and benefits of the Ecological Solid Waste Management or ESWM, ensure compliance of the barangays with the mandates of the RA 9003, and give appropriate recognition to model villages with outstanding practices on ESWM.

All 80 villages of the city are required to join the search and will be clustered into three categories and evaluated regardless of financial capacity, area, and number of households.

Unlike its first launching, the Oro Kalimpyo Awards 2018 will also recognize schools who are practicing proper solid waste management.

Mabelin said this is to put into the children's consciousness that waste management needs to be practiced every day.

Last year, Barangays 22, Canitoan and Tuburan won the first place awards in the competition's Urban, Sub-Urban and Hinterland categories, respectively.
