THE Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) said the Bantayan Airport runway extension project is nearly done and the airport is projected to open soon.

Construction of a perimeter fence, meanwhile, is about 30 percent complete, according to MCIAA general manager and chief executive officer Steve Dicdican.

Dicdican led a team that conducted an ocular inspection of the project recently.

Mary Ann Dimabayao, MCIAA Public Affairs Office head, said another assessment will be conducted on September 25 and October 2, 2020.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page on September 12, 2020, MCIAA said the entire airport project on Bantayan Island was about 50 percent complete.

It is targeted to be completed in December 2020.

The runway project, which extends the runway to 1.2 kilometers from the previous 900 meters, was about 70 percent complete, Dicdican said.

The MCIAA is upgrading the airport with the aim of transforming it into a commercial airport.

Under a memorandum of agreement signed on September 30, 2019, the MCIAA and the Province of Cebu agreed to jointly develop the airport.

The MCIAA earlier said it had allocated P94.4 million for the concreting and extension of the runway as well as the construction of a perimeter fence. (SunStar Philippines from PR)
