New dessert place boosts Cebu’s creative city label

WANTING to bring back memories of a chill time with friends and family with halo-halo as an all-time favorite, a new dessert place will open on Don Jose Avila St., Cebu City.

Cheryl Pages-Alba, owner and general manager of Summers, said the concept of the place is to provide a “tropical escape in the middle of the city,” to both local and international guests.

“The concept of Summers is to bring back the old Cebu where we could just go out, wear flip-flops and chill, just good vibes. We want to focus more on clean fun with wine and test tube drinks,” she said.

Summers is one of the food brands under the Pages Holdings Group. It features a 7.5-meter-tall graffiti art of French artist Vinie Graffiti, who flew to Cebu to paint the masterpiece.

Pages said they tried for months to get in touch with her until she finally responded.

This is the artist’s first graffiti art in Southeast Asia. Pages hoped this would inspire more artists to come out especially since Cebu City has been recognized as part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

By joining the UCCN, cities worldwide commit to place culture and creativity at the core of their sustainable development strategies, policies and initiatives.

Vinie is known for her “larger-than-life portraits of women.” She told reporters she was inspired by Cebuanos when she worked on the art.

“I was inspired by the smiles of Cebuanos, mangoes, hanging rice and the flowers. I worked for 15 days to plan and paint it. It is my most detailed work ever,” she said.

Vinie said she hoped her art would open up the doors for more artists to showcase their art to everyone and make it accessible to people from all walks of life.

Pages said they “wished to open the doors of inspiration to aspiring artists and enthusiasts to explore this highly visual and creative expression on an international level.”

Summers will officially open on Friday, Dec. 20, 2019. (JOB)
