Cuenco: Anti-aging basics, specifics

Joanna Cuenco

I’M not ashamed to admit I’ll be one year more experienced in life tomorrow. Here are my stress-free simple rules for keeping skin healthy in my early 30s.

The basics

- Even if you apply moisturizing creams or hyaluronic acid, these will be for naught if you’re not getting enough water.

- Flush out toxins and get circulation going with regular workout sessions. I am at the gym four or five times a week, but just the minimum of three will do you good inside and out.

- The ideal amount of sleep for adults is seven to eight hours nightly. I’m guilty of getting barely seven a night, but I do make sure to catch up on weekends.

The specifics

- I apply a minimum of SPF35 on my face daily. I still get freckles despite this, so imagine what kind of pigmentation I could be getting without sun protection.

- The skin on the eye area is the first to show signs of aging, so apply eye cream both day and night.

- Do not neglect the neck during your skin care routine. Most of us don’t think about this area, but sagging here later in life will be very evident.

- You may need something richer than your basic moisturizer when skin isn’t as plump as it was back in your teens. My skin seems to like facial oils before bed, as they’re less prone to dissipating overnight. I’ve tried various brands from Skinpotions to Kiehl’s.

- Exfoliate and mask regularly to stimulate skin, as it’s normal for skin cells to turn over more slowly when we age. I swear by Origins Clear Improvement mask, and pretty much any sheet mask when I think my skin could use some extra pampering. The Guardian sheet masks at Rose Pharmacy are only P49 and do the job just fine.
