New Cebu art gallery launches inaugural show

“Sa Kanunay, Stories of Life in Transition” was the inaugural show of artist Jun Impas’ Florentino’s Art Gallery, featuring the works of 21 artists, and curated by assistant professor Jay Nathan Jore.

According to Jore, ”’Sa Kanunay’ inquires into the deep relationship between art and time. ‘Sa Kanunay’ presents a biography of constancy, dedication, commitment. As the inaugural show of Florentino’s Art Gallery, the exhibition pays tribute to the hard work and passionate vision of the gallery’s founder, artist Jun Impas. ‘Sa Kanunay’—as always, as usually expected—displays his tireless efforts to fulfill a dream; the opening of his own gallery for Cebu’s artists to come together, exchange ideas, and promote their works to the public. To his friends and fellow artists who are his constant guides through the years, the exhibition is a homage where on white pristine gallery walls enshrine memories of sustained friendship and collaboration.”

These works were done during the Covid-19 pandemic and thus, Jore added: “This movement toward the hazy uncalculated articulation may take its course from the growing uncertainty and precarious conditions of the human existence made grievable by the pandemic.”

The 21 artists exhibiting their craft and aspects of art were Gabby Abellana, Fr. Edgardo A. Laurin, Msgr. Agustin Ancajas, Adeste Deguilmo, Bong Francisco, Fred Galan, Benjie Goyha, Melanie Impas, Guido Lubanga, Dennis “Sio” Montera, Clint Normandia, Celso Pepito, Ritchie Quijano, Karl Roque, Lucilo “Jojo” Sagayno, Antonio Vidal, Mar Vidal, Marlowe Villagonzalo, Kimsoy Yap, Orley Ypon and Sonia Yrastorza.

Gallery owner/artist Jun Impas, of course, also participated in the exhibit.

The works in the exhibit show not only what Jore described as “Stories of Life in Transition” but also the development and state of art in Cebu as depicted by the exhibiting artists in their preferred art forms.

Florentino’s Art Gallery is located in Barangay Gaas, Balamban, Cebu.
