Questions, answers: New K-Drama ‘Twenty Five Twenty One’

Zombies have been all the rage recently but now a newly released K-Drama television series promises to touch more on human sensibility. “Twenty Five Twenty One” now has two episodes out on Netflix, with more coming your way these coming weeks. Here are some fast facts about the new K-Drama which has fans already predicting for it to be the next big thing in Korean television.

What does the title mean?

It simply refers to the ages of when the two lead characters of this new K-Drama—Baek Yi-jin (Nam Joo-hyuk) and Na Hee-do (Kim Tae-ri)— when they “meet again.” Fans of K-Dramas will recognize the male lead in his recent work “Start-Up” (Nam). While appearing in the movie “Space Sweepers,” “Twenty Five Twenty One” only marks the second time Kim will be in a television series, her first one being “Mr Sunshine.”

What is it about?

The story is set in the 1998 financial crisis. Director Jung Ji-hyun describes “Twenty Five Twenty One” as a “coming-of-age” story, where the characters “have their dreams taken away and they get together to find ways to move forward. Sometimes, they go through emotional times,” said the director during an online press conference in Feb. 9.

Why should I watch it?

“Twenty Five Twenty One” is packed with all the good things which make it a very pleasant, lightly emotional watch as episodes are released every weekend on Netflix. There are 16 episodes expected, and all these will weave stories of love, conflict, humor and hope.

“Looking at how these young people go through life in 1998, that would actually give some messages that can resonate with the present-day audience,” director Jung said, relating the challenges the characters go through with how the world is coping with the current pandemic.

“So like this ‘very cold winter,’ I hope that we can provide you with warmth through this show, and now spring will come,” lead actor Nam added.
