Tales of history

SM has been a part of every Filipino’s life ever since. In 1958, Henry Sy Sr. opened the first Shoemart store in downtown Manila.

Eventually it turned into a department store, became SM, and expanded further, which led to its first shopping center: SM City North Edsa, which opened in 1985.

At present, it has close to a thousand retail stores: 70 malls in this country as well as seven in China. A one-stop shop, it holds true to the promise that indeed, they’ve got it all.

SM launched its 60th Anniversary celebration which meant a ton of activities, experience and visual sights in line with the festivities.

At SM Seaside City Cebu last May 25, its 60th Anniversary celebration began with the annual Santacruzan sa Sugbo 2018.

The Santacruzan is a religious-historical pageant that takes place during the month of May in different parts of the Philippines from villages to many cities, telling the story of the search of the True Cross by Queen Helena and son Constantine the Great.

A mass blessing first took place at the Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod. Staged at the Mountain Wing Atrium, audiences got a full view of the parade of 30 beautiful women portraying different personifications, all wearing the creations of designers of Clothes for Life headed by designer Philipp Tampus in eye-catching pieces from dresses to voluminous ball gowns—an epitome of grace, beauty and tradition.

Audiences not only laid witness to Philippine tradition and Cebu’s abundance in talent as that night was about a celebration of SM through the years, the stories shared by its mall goers and the people behind the brand; with it was the excitement of looking forward to the years ahead.
