Utzurrum: The Bachelors-Femina Centenary

Chinggay V. Utzurrum

BACK in the early 1900’s, Cebu’s classic, exclusive and prestigious Bachelors-Femina Clubs were born.

This laid-back era was more into traditional means of communication like telephones, telegrams, greeting cards etc. Mobile phones, social media and the internet were still unheard of then.

So, how does boy meet girl? Also traditionally: House visits, jam sessions (no discos, please!) and school fairs. Yessiree, our single girls were indeed prim and proper! Then comes the Bachelors-Femina (BF) Clubs, whose traditional, annual formal Innocents Day reception and ball, was held every Dec. 28 at the Casino Español de Cebu.

Highlight was the “Rigodon de Honor,” a formal and much-anticipated dance where our dainty girls and dashing boys, gracefully moved back and forth, to everyone’s delight. It’s in this kind of event, where boy meets girl, and ends up as friends, sweethearts and even beyond!

Forward to 2019 when the Bachelors-Femina met again, also at the Casino Español de Cebu, in a less than formal dinner setting to recall, reminisce, those centennial yesteryears!

Grateful credit goes to organizers Perla Agudo, Annie Neri and Anne Marie Uy!
