Bankers complain of ‘costly’ ATM gluing scheme

THE automated teller machine (ATM) scammers had affected the finances and operations of some banks.

Cebu Bankers Club (CBC) president Neil Darwin Credo said gluing an ATM keypad can lead to its damage and its replacement is expensive.

Last Dec. 10, bank employees caught alleged ATM scammer Lunalyn De Pedro of Iloilo City gluing the keypad of an ATM inside a mall in Barangay Tipolo, Mandaue City.

Credo said that gluing a keypad is a new modus in Cebu.

“They usually glue the ‘0’ and the ‘cancel’ keypads, so that when you enter your ATM (personal identification number or PIN) you can’t type ‘0’ after any number and you can’t cancel your transaction,” he said.

The scammer would then approach the person and offer help in withdrawing cash by asking for the latter’s ATM PIN.

“First, check all the keypads if its working or not and never entertain strangers especially when you withdraw at ATMs. Go inside the bank and ask for help,” Credo said.

He said they already instructed CBC bank members to remind their clients, employees and guards to check their ATMs on a regular basis. (from HBL of SuperBalita Cebu/KAL)

THREAT. According to a Capitol consultant, the Cebu City Government is threatening to shut down the Cebu North Bus Terminal at the back of SM City Cebu (left) and the Cebu South Bus Terminal along N. Bacalso Ave. for operating without a business permit. The Province, which runs both terminals, maintains that it operates the facilities as a public service for passengers going to the province and vice versa. /
