CEBUANO basketball player Eliud “Eloy” Poligrates was arrested on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, after he allegedly assaulted his former girlfriend in Cebu City.

The physical altercation happened on the parking lot of a convenience store in Barangay Sta. Cruz.

Poligrates, 33, won the Most Valuable Player award while playing for the Marinerong Pilipino in the Philippine Basketball Association D-League Foundation Cup in 2019.

The athlete, who hails from Poro town in the Camotes Islands, Cebu, was arrested by Abellana Police Station personnel. The player’s ex-girlfriend had complained that she had been physically abused by him.

Police Corporal Janice Deiparine of the Women and Children’s Protection Desk said Poligrates’ 39-year-old ex-girlfriend immediately called the police station after the incident.

Though the victim has expressed no intention of filing charges against Poligrates, the latter will have to stay in jail until the prescribed reglementary period for his detention has expired, said Deiparine.

Superbalita Cebu tried to get Poligrates’ and the victim’s statements on the matter, but they refused to comment. (BBT/RSR/JKV)
