Businessman-actor Richard Yap to face Del Mar in 2019 polls?

WILL Cebuanos be seeing “Sir Chief” in the House of Representatives apart from his on-screen appearances soon?

Although nothing is final yet, actor Richard Yap is one of the opposition’s probable candidates for Cebu City north district representative in the May 2019 elections.

“There’ll be changes, but more or less...especially candidates from the north, in our discussions, he’s going to be (one),” said Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella.

Yap, best known for his role as “Sir Chief” in a famous television drama, is also entertaining the idea of entering politics.

“I’m seriously thinking about it. There are people who have asked me to run for the past five or six years already,” he told reporters.

Yap comes from a family of businessmen.

He said he worked for 22 years in the corporate industry before starting his acting career seven years ago.

He spent his early education in Cebu City and took up medical technology for two years in Velez College before transferring to De La Salle University to study business management.

The businessman-actor was previously registered as a voter in Barangay Guadalupe before transferring to Manila in 2016. He is now a registered voter in Barangay Apas.

Asked about the matter, Rep. Raul del Mar (Cebu City, north district) said he has no qualms about whoever will run against him.

“The gates are wide open for everyone to join the electoral process. My only appeal is let this coming election be ruled by politics of hope, not of cynicism or hate. The people of Cebu City north, I trust, will make their choice according to what has been done for them and the community through the years, not just what is promised to them now. And whom they can rely on for service in most days of their lives,” he said.

Should Yap decide to push through with his congressional bid, it will be the first time for the 51-year-old to face Del Mar, 77.

But it would be the second personality in the entertainment industry that Del Mar would face. Del Mar beat Anabelle Rama in the 2013 polls.

Meanwhile, Labella is personally endorsing Councilor Joy Pesquera as Barug Team Rama’s bet for south district representative in the 2019 polls.

Pesquera has expressed interest in running against incumbent south district Rep. Rodrigo Abellanosa, which the latter welcomed. (RTF)
