Capitol to insure frontliners in barangays

Sunnexdesk

MORE than 20,000 workers from 1,066 barangays in Cebu Province may soon avail themselves of the Provincial Government’s life and accident insurance program.

The Provincial Board (PB) has approved a resolution filed by reelected Second District Member Jose Mari “Tata” Salvador, which provides an insurance program that will allow barangay frontliners to receive P25,000 in case of death and P2,500 in case of an accident.

Salvador, who sits as chairman of the committee on health, said there are 27,300 barangay tanods, health workers and nutrition scholars all over the province who are exposed to risks while at work.

Availability of funds

Through the measure, barangay tanods, health workers and nutrition scholars will be initially covered under the insurance program amounting to P6 million with Fortune Life Insurance Company Inc.

In a May 16 report published on the Provincial Government’s website, Salvador said the PB plans to provide insurance coverage to all barangay workers. This, though, will have to depend on the availability of funds.

“Importante gyud nga ma-insured ang mga frontliners sa barangay kay sila man ang mosuroy sa mga kabarangayan ug nabutang man sila sa risgo. Sama sa mapaakan og iro o maligsan (It’s important to have frontliners of barangays insured because they are the ones who go to the field and are exposed to risks like getting bitten by dogs or getting hit by vehicles),” Salvador said.
