THE Cebu City Government has to reject first the approved Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project before other local government units can get the budget intended for it, Mayor Tomas Osmeña said.

In his news conference, Osmeña said that although efforts to delay the project have caused him worries, the City will not give up the BRT project.

Marikina City Rep. Bayani Fernando has proposed to use the funds meant for the Cebu BRT project for the implementation of the Metro Manila BRT project instead. Fernando said the Edsa and Commonwealth roads are BRT-ready, being wider than those in the approved BRT route in Cebu City.

“I worry about everything. Everybody is trying to damage what we do here in Cebu, almost everything. But we have to fight all of that,” Osmeña told reporters.

The World Bank approved last September 2014 a financial package of US$141 million for the Cebu BRT, including a loan of $25 million from the Clean Technology Fund. (RVC)

THREAT. According to a Capitol consultant, the Cebu City Government is threatening to shut down the Cebu North Bus Terminal at the back of SM City Cebu (left) and the Cebu South Bus Terminal along N. Bacalso Ave. for operating without a business permit. The Province, which runs both terminals, maintains that it operates the facilities as a public service for passengers going to the province and vice versa. /
