THE Cebu City Market Operations Division on Maundy Thursday, April 9, 2020, responded to a large crowd that gathered at the Carbon Public Market despite precautionary measures imposed by government to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

As of 11 a.m., authorities were able to control the number of consumers who can enter the market premises.

In a Facebook post of City Market Administrator Jonil Matuguina, a large number of consumers went to the market to buy ingredients for binignit, resulting to people not observing social distancing.

“Tungod sa binignit, nawala ang kahadlok sa Covid-19 ug disiplina (because of binignit, the fear of Covid-19 and discipline were lost),” wrote Matuguina in his Facebook post.

Binignit is a sweet dish made of yam, sticky rice and coconut milk, which has been a staple dessert among Filipinos every Holy Week.

Matuguina also urged consumers to report to any market personnel if there are vendors overpricing goods. (JJL)
