TO ENHANCE the online learning capabilities of urban schools in Cebu City, Globe Telecom has partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu City Division in providing a total of 10,000 SIM cards for free to students in schools.

Abellana National High School and Don Carlos A. Gothong Memorial High School are among the pilot schools. Globe said this is the first city in the Philippines where it rolled out the program.

DepEd Cebu City Division superintendent Rhea Mar Angtud said urban public schools are prioritized during the distribution, which will be led by Globe.

“For the 10,000 SIM cards, it will be (distributed) to the urban schools because all our online science classes are there, particularly in the high schools. We already have pilot tested schools,” she said.

Because classes are now online, Angtud said parents can save on other fees like allowances which will then be realigned for internet access purposes.

The program called Reinvent Learning with Globe aims to help students in their connectivity needs.

Students who will receive SIM cards will get a sampler load of five gigabytes (GB) of open-access data and 1 GB data of GoLearn apps plus 1 GB GoWifi access.

The program also provides students the access to online educational materials through affordable promos that Globe offers specially for students.

Adonis Evangelista, regional sales head of Globe Telecom, said the program strengthens the students’ capability to connect to the internet during the time of the coronavirus pandemic where online classes and activities are being done already.

“We are not only giving out SIM cards. We also loaded them with data for the students for free internet access,” he said.

Evangelista said their main objective is to disseminate that Globe created a specific promo intended only for students.

“Learning is very important nowadays for our students, and there should be no hindrance despite the pandemic, especially with the new Covid-19 variant. We are not yet done fighting this virus, but we also believe that there should be no student left behind,” he said.

Go50 for Students comes with 5 GB of open access data; 1 GB of data for GoLEARN apps that include YouTube Learning, Wikipedia, Google Suite, CourseHero, Canva, WhatsApp, Telegram and Spotify; 1 GB of free GoWiFi access; and unlimited texts to all networks.

The promo is valid for three days and even comes with a free three-month subscription to Shaw Academy or Canva Pro. (JOB)
