LAPU-LAPU City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan issued an executive order (EO) that bans the entry of pork and pork-related products from Region 11 or Davao Region.

Executive Order 2020-18, signed by Chan on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020, also prohibits the entry of piglets, frozen pork-related products and other products like chicken and fish that are commingled with pork products from Davao Region.

Chan’s EO was issued after the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) confirmed the presence of African swine fever (ASF) in Davao Region.

Reports said close to 1,000 hogs died there due to ASF.

Chan said the spread of ASF should not reach the city, especially that the Mactan-Cebu International Airport is on the island.

The mayor said the EO stays in effect until the Department of Agriculture clears the Davao Region of ASF.

Pork products from other provinces that remained ASF-free can still enter the city.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia on Monday, Feb. 3, signed Executive Order 4, Series of 2020 that blocks the entry of pork products from Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro (Compostela Valley).

Garcia earlier ordered a ban on pork and pork products from Luzon after the ASF outbreak was confirmed there by the DA in September 2019.

In December, Garcia also banned pork and pork products from Eastern Visayas after the region lifted its ban on Luzon pork products. (GCM / MVG )
