Market authority awaits applications from firecracker vendors

RETAILERS in Cebu City have yet to apply for permits to sell firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices.

City Market Administrator Irvin Cabales said that as of Dec. 4, 2020, his office had not received any application for permit to sell firecrackers.

Cabales said a group of legitimate firecracker sellers, who have been selling at the South Road Properties (SRP) annually, already expressed their intention to sell again this year. But the group has yet to send a formal request or application to the Office of the City Mayor.

In acquiring a special permit to sell firecrackers, a request letter addressed to the mayor must be submitted, Cabales said.

A special permit must be secured by the retailers since firecrackers are considered explosive devices.

Cabales said should the authorities find out that there are retailers selling or displaying firecrackers now without permit, the products will be confiscated.

As Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are approaching, Cabales said they will start inspecting the city markets, especially the Carbon Public Market, to ensure there are no firecrackers being sold in the complex.

Cabales said his office is also closely monitoring the entry of products in Carbon to ensure safety.

For the past years, the City had a designated vending area at SRP where firecracker retailers display their products. / JJL
