THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (Pagasa) said there are five to seven coming tropical cyclones towards the end of the year, mostly in November and December. Pagasa Mactan Chief Alberto Quiblat said there is a possibility that most of these weather disturbances are strong typhoons, and there is a 60 to 70 percent chance that these will make landfall in the Visayas. He cited typhoon Ruping on Nov. 13, 1990; super typhoon Yolanda on Nov. 8, 2013; and typhoon Senyang on Dec. 30, 2015 as among those that made landfall in the Visayas. Quiblat said the coming tropical cyclones will bring heavy rains that will compensate for rain depreciation from June to August. He said the tropical cyclones will be followed by the El Niño phenomenon, which is seen to destroy the plants. “Tropical cyclone” is the generic term of all weather disturbances, he explained, and there are five categories: Tropical Depression, with a speed of 45 kilometers per hour (KPH) to 62 KPH; Severe Tropical Storm, 89 KPH to 117 KPH; Typhoon, 118 to 220 KPH; and Super Typhoon, more than 220 KPH. With the coming weather disturbances, Quiblat advised those residing on riverbanks and those residing 50 meters from the sea to transfer to safer ground. EOB
