Ylac, school mark 70 years

THE Young Ladies Association of Charity Inc. (Ylac) Cebu City Unit and the Cebu City Ylac School Foundation Inc. mark their platinum jubilee or 70 years founding anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019.

The Ylac Cebu City Unit was organized in 1949 when a group of committed women led by the late Imelda Borromeo-Cancio decided to respond to the most pressing problem of less fortunate Cebuanos—the education of their children. Thus, the Cebu City Ylac School was organized.

The school has become the main source of pride and inspiration to Ylac members. It provided basic education to young children of marginalized families of Cebu. Graduates became a testimony to how poverty is not a hindrance to a better life for themselves and their loved ones.

From the school’s humble beginnings at Legazpi St. to raising much-needed funds like the foster-parent drive and to finally finding its permanent location at P. Gomez St., the school has withstood the test of times.

The Cebu City Ylac School Foundation Inc. started providing basic education to deserving young children for free.

However, in the last three years, the school, due to financial constraints, was forced to impose minimal tuition. Nevertheless, it continues to be subsidized by the foundation.

At present, the school has 437 enrolled pupils, staff and teachers. It now has bigger classrooms and a multi-purpose area.

The Cebu City Ylac Unit aspires to give education that accentuates Christian values and holistic development in the hopes of molding these children to become socially responsible citizens in the future.

The anniversary celebration will begin with a mass at 9 a.m. on Sunday at the Cebu City Ylac School lobby. It will be officiated by Ylac alumnus Fr. Russel Rupecio, and the homilist will be the school’s long-time spiritual director, Fr. Ulrich Schlect, SVD.

After the mass, newly accredited Ylac members will be inducted into office.

Outstanding benefactors, donors, individuals, entities and members will be awarded for supporting Ylac Cebu City Unit and the Cebu City Ylac School Foundation Inc. through 70 years of their existence.

There will be other alumni activities, including the most awaited selection of Miss Ylac Alumni.

Community lunch at the Kusina ni Sta. Martha will be held for the homeless.
