By Akbayan Sen. Risa Hontiveros

THE 1st of December marks World Aids Day. This year, we highlight the role of our schools and communities in the fight against the disease.

More younger Filipinos being diagnosed with HIV means a bigger role for families, educators, counselors and healthcare providers in reversing the trend. Access to community-based healthcare and provision of age-appropriate sexuality education go hand-in-hand in turning the tide of HIV and AIDS epidemic in the country.

I authored the Philippine HIV and Aids Policy Law, or Republic Act 11166, with the hope of seeing an end to HIV and Aids in this generation. The law’s passage last year also calls for robust action and more effective implementation from the government’s part.

Today, we begin shaping a future that thrives, nourishes and heals.
