Tell it to SunStar: On early release, death penalty

Atty. Rex Fernandez

FIRST, there are laws on imprisonment and one of these is on good behavior computation. We can look into these laws and ask whether this was complied with considering the several convictions of the criminal Antonio Sanchez. Second, if we don’t like these kinds of criminals to avail of good behavior early release which we allowed because we did not like the death penalty, then we must rethink our position on the death penalty.

The absence of the death penalty is based upon the principle of penology where penalty is imposed to rehabilitate. Every prisoner is entitled to rehabilitation whatever the crime is. However, if we believe that there are crimes which do not entitle the criminal to rehabilitation but to put him in the old adage of the penalty fitting the crime, then we must allow the death penalty—your choice.
