Cebuano big man Sonny Thoss has decided to retire from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), ending a colorful 15-year career that saw him win three championships with the Alaska Aces on top of many individual awards.

According to reports, Thoss’ contract with Alaska expired back in August and the 38-year old opted to retire.

Thoss, a 6-foot-7 big man whose mother hails from Cebu, had already been pondering retirement earlier this year but was talked into playing in the Philippie Cup so that he could be given a proper jersey retirement ceremony during the season. However, the health crisis shuttled those plans as the league was forced to suspend its games indefinitely.

Aside from the three titles, Thoss, who was selected fifth overall in the 2004 PBA Draft, walks away with two selections to the Mythical First team, and four to the Mythical Second team. He was also a 12-time selection to the All Star Game.

Thoss also represented the country, suiting up for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2012 and 2015 editions of the William Jones Cup. However, his best achievement came in the 2015 FIBA Asia Men’s Championship in Changsha, China where he helped the team win the silver medal. (JNP)
