THE Southwestern University (SWU-Phinma) Cobras and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters snagged the second and third places in the Mayor’s Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament 2019 at the Lope Asis Memorial Gymnasium in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur on Saturday, June 29, 2019.

The Vincare Pharma-backed Cobras fell short against the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws, 84-61, in the championship game on Saturday night.

The Cobras won P150,000 for placing second in the pocket-tournament organized by Van Halen Parmis and supported by the local government unit of Bayugan City.

Lamine Thiam scored 28 points, while Shaquille Imperial added 11 in a losing effort for the Cobras.

Wendell Comboy finished with 15 points leading the eventual champion FEU, which pocketed a cool P200,000 cash prize.

The Mair Construction/UC, on the other hand, proved that their first win against the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) team Valenzuela Classic was no fluke.

The Webmasters beat the Madyaw Construction-backed Valenzuela anew, 91-87, to bag third place.

UC first beat Valenzuela, 83-81, in the elimination round of the tournament conducted as part of the Bayugan City’s 12th Charter Day Anniversary and the Bayug Festival Celebration.

UC did it again with streaky shooter Tristan Albina pouring in 26 big points. Tosh Sesay was equally impressive with 25 points and court general Darryl Shane Menina handed 16.

Albina exploded with 14 points anchored by four three-pointers in the second period when UC put up 26 points to end the first half with a 48-38 edge.

Valenzuela answered in the third quarter with a 28-18 run to make it 66-all going to the final period. UC scored 25 points in the final quarter to run away with the third-place finish that came with a P100,000 cash prize.

Mel Mabigat pitched in 22 points and Carlo De Chavez contributed 21 in a losing effort for Valenzuela, which settled for fourth place and the P75,000 cash prize. (RSC)
