GUV Cup volleyball opens

THE relaunching of the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup went without a hitch, and featured a straight-sets win by Catmon over Mandaue City, 25-18, 25-21, in an exhibition match at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex on Saturday, September 28, 2019.

None other than Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia declared the ninth edition of the tournament open during a simple opening ceremony that featured a parade of the participating teams who donned their respective teams’ colors.

Mandaue City and Daanbantayan were feted with special awards, namely the best in uniform and earliest team, respectively.

In all, 45 teams coming from the various cities and municipalities of Cebu, which have been divided into seven clusters are competing in this tournament.

Later on, Garcia initially served as the first referee while Glenn Soco, the Guv Cup’s vice-chairman, was the second referee.

The cluster elimination champion will bag P20,000 while the runner-up will go home with P10,000. The overall champion will receive a whopping P100,000 while the runner-up will receive P50,000.

More than the monetary considerations, Oslob head coach Agostine Gibe is grateful for the Guv Cup’s return as it would give players the opportunity to showcase their talent and hopefully gain a college scholarship. (SunStar Cebu)
