KNF ousts DBTC, Makes B18 semis

JOHN Cyril Ybañez struck early to power KNF-Don Bosco Boys Home (DBBH) to the semifinal round after a 3-0 win over Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) in the Boys 18 Division of the AboitizLand Football Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020.

Ybañez needed only a minute to get into the scoresheet and added another in the 29th for a 2-0 count. DBTC tried to fight back but found itself three goals down after Jaire Dave Tanjay scored in the 33rd minute.

KNF-DBBH improved to a 3-1 record, good for nine points, while DBTC B closed the elimination round with a 2-2 record good for six points and third place.

The University of San Jose-Recoletos leads the group after winning all four matches and will face the No. 2 seed in Group A, while KNF-DBBH will take on the top team in the semis.

Both DBTC A and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu are undefeated in Group A and the winner in their final match will finish at No. 1.

Meanwhile, in the Boys 16 Division, DBTC A secured the top spot after blanking KNF-DBBH, 2-0, for its fifth win in the group stage. Andre Custado got the first goal in the 42nd minute and Joseph Garces added another in the 63rd minute.

DBTC A finished the elimination round with a 5-0 record and the no. 1 spot, while KNF-DBBH settled for the second spot with a 4-1 record. In the semifinal, KNF-DBBH will take on Group B No. 1, the undefeated SHS-Ateneo A, while DBTC B will face Group B No. 2 Abellana National School.

In the other Boys 16 game, DBTC B closed out its campaign with a 1-0 win over Giuseppe with Ernest Gabriel Berongoy scoring the lone goal in the 61st minute. DBTC B is fourth in the group at a 2-2 record, while Giuseppe is fifth at 1-4.

In the Men’s Open Division 1, Leylam will face Erco Bro on Feb. 16, while the University of Cebu will make its debut against the struggling Don Sacredale and Makoto FC takes on the University of San Carlos at the CCSC. / ML
