Mendoza: Tiger time here? Jon Magturo’s letter

Al Mendoza

TIGER Woods seems headed for a majors triumph. With his four-under-par 68 in yesterday’s Round 2 for a minus-6 total, he is only a shot off the leaders in the 83rd Masters in Augusta, Georgia. I can’t wait to see him capture his fifth green jacket on Monday, ending a 14-year Slam slump—finally?

Only the gods of golf now can deny him his 15th major, and move to within three of Jack Nicklaus’ all-time best of 18 Slams.

To dream, the possible dream...

LETTER. The following is Jon Magturo’s (my Los Angeles-based bilas, the husband of my sister-in-law, Ofelia) recent letter to nba-letters-l@nba.com.

“The Lakers’ biggest problem is Magic Johnson, president of basketball operations. We are questioning his ability to manage a good franchise. We admire him as a player but he is currently in the wrong position. He’s damaging the performance of the team & no doubt he will bring the franchise to ruin if not relieved in his position soon. Does he really know what he is doing? He thinks he can wing his job by making outrageous & nonsense talk. He should be replaced. A very concerned fan.”

The reply:

“Dear Jon,

“Thanks for contacting us to share your thoughts on Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers.

“We are always glad to hear from our fans. Should you wish to share your comments with the Lakers directly, visit https://www.nba.com/lakers/contact.

“We greatly appreciate your passion for the NBA, and will continue doing everything we can to develop the league and enhance the experience we provide to our fans.

Thanks again for writing us and for being a fan of the NBA!

“Sincerely,

Bill—NBA Fan Relations”

Two days after Jon got the reply, Magic Johnson was no longer the Lakers’ president for basketball operations.

Where can fans write to their favorite Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) team? Likewise, does the PBA also entertain fan mail?

I cited Jon Magturo’s letter if only to open the eyes of the PBA teams and the PBA as a whole on how important our fans are to the league.

Without them, the PBA is nothing.
