TALISAY City will host the 10th Balik Baroto Regatta race on Oct. 12 with up to 50 racers.

The race, which will feature two-man barotos, will have a total of P149,000 in prizes.

“We are organizing this hoping that the fishermen will go back to using a baroto, especially now that fuel prices are very high,” organizer Aljun Diamante said in Cebuano during the event’s launching. “This can also help sustainable fishing because barotos don’t cause any pollution.”

The champion in the event will get P30,000 and a trophy, while the second placer will get P25,000. The third placer will pocket P20,000 and the fourth placer will earn P15,000. The fifth placer will get P10,000 while the sixth to 10th placers will get P3,000 each. The 11th to 25th placers will also earn P2,000 each.

Now on its 10th edition, founder David Odilao also hopes to bring the event in Manila with a nationwide participation.

“We can have each province sponsor one baroto or we can provide one for each province,” he said of his vision. ML

THREAT. According to a Capitol consultant, the Cebu City Government is threatening to shut down the Cebu North Bus Terminal at the back of SM City Cebu (left) and the Cebu South Bus Terminal along N. Bacalso Ave. for operating without a business permit. The Province, which runs both terminals, maintains that it operates the facilities as a public service for passengers going to the province and vice versa. /
