UV Baby Lancers survives Ateneo

STREAK-shooting guard Albert Sacayan atoned for his woeful first game performance as he scored the crucial points to lift the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers past the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 57-48, in the 2019 Cesafi high school basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum on Saturday, September 14, 2019.

With UV up by just two points, 48-50, after Ateneo de Cebu wingman Jhoernel Tangkay sank a midrange jumper with 1:21 left, Sacayan and Christian Alilin calmly sank four straight free-throws to give UV a six-point cushion, 54-48.

Then, after Ateneo de Cebu’s LA Casinillo turned the ball over, Alilin and Sacayan split their charities to seal the victory for UV and even up their record up at 1-1.

Sacayan finished the game with 17 points, three rebounds and five steals. Afterwards, the marksman from Balamban said that after he scored just one point in their season-opener, he paid more attention to playing good defense this time around.

“We just have to play defense. If we play good defense, the offense will just come later,” Sacayan said.

Samuel Melicor also helped out with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds along with three assists and two steals. Dave Basalo struggled with just five points but grabbed 14 boards.

Ateneo de Cebu sputtered down the stretch and scored just four points in the entire fourth period. Tangkay, the son of former PBA standout Jojo Tangkay, led the Magis Eagles with 11 points.

Meanwhile in the first game, the Cebu Eastern College Dragons scorched the University of Cebu-Lapu Lapu and Mandaue Campus, 68-60, to even up their record at 1-1. (SunStar Cebu)
