Yanong beats Burns

Edri Aznar

REYMOND Yanong becomes the second Filipino fighter to win a closed-door boxing show in the US after a split decision win over Clay Burns on June 26, 2020 (Philippine time) at The Bubble of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Yanong got the nod of two of the three judges with a 59-55 score by Julie Lederman and 58-56 score by Chris Migliore. The other judge, Robert Hoyle, had Burns ahead 58-56.

Earlier this year, the 26-year-old Yanong made his US debut with a fourth round stoppage loss to Frank Martin. He bounced back and captured his first win in US soil after his victory over Burns.

Yanong improved to 11-5-1 with nine knockouts.

The 33-year-old Burns, on the other hand, dropped to 9-8-2 with four knockouts, losing three of his last five contests.

Yanong is the third Filipino to fight behind closed doors since the return of boxing after sporting events all over the world were knocked out due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier this month, Mike Plania scored a huge majority decision upset over top bantamweight prospect Joshua Greer Jr. last June 16, 2020 also at The Bubble.

On July 3, 2020 (Philippine time), it will Mark Bernaldez's turn as he takes on unbeaten prospect Albert Bell in a 10-round fight in another Top Rank Show at The Bubble.
