Yap fails to make weight; fight off

VETERAN Marjohn Yap won’t be fighting in The Bubble Friday, July 17, 2020 (PH time), after failing to make weight for his 10-round fight with Miguel Marriaga.

The 31-year-old Yap weighed-in at 136.7 pounds, 8.7 pounds over the contracted weight limit of 128 pounds. Marriaga was well below the limit and tipped the scales at 127.1 pounds.

Yap had less than two weeks to prepare for this fight. He earlier told SunStar Cebu that he was way above the limit and was hoping that he would make weight.

Yap took a leave of absence from his work as a caregiver to take this fight on short notice because the offer was too good to resist.

Yap, 30-15 with 15 knockouts, trained on his own in his home in California.

Yap fought back-to-back fights in the US in 2019, wherein he lost to World Boxing Organization No. 2 contender Angelo Leo and Angel Alejandro both by unanimous decision.

Because the Yap vs. Marriaga fight was scrapped, the bout between Felix Verdejo and Will Madera has been elevated to main event.

On the other hand, Pinoy prospect John Vincent Moralde’s fight with Alexis del Bosque was also cancelled due to a Covid-19 related issue, according to ESPN’s Dan Rafael. (EKA)
