PCOO launches quake info drive

Roberto A. Gumba Jr.

FOLLOWING the earthquakes that affected several parts of Mindanao, the Presidential Communication and Operations Office (PCOO) launched an earthquake information dissemination initiative.

In a statement, PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar said the agency activated Laging Handa: Earthquake Update, which aims to "inform the public of the government's response and other actions."

He said Laging Handa involves the media under PCOO such as the People's Television, Philippine News Agency, Philippine Broadcasting Service, Bureau of Communications Services, Philippine Information Agency, and Radio Television Malacañang to keep the public abreast of the earthquake situation in Davao City.

He said it will be led by the Assistant Secretary for Special Concern-Mindanao Joseph Lawrence P. Garcia.

Andanar urged the public to take information from legitimate sources to avoid panic.

"We advise the public to take note of advisories and announcements only from legitimate sources from the national and local government to avoid panic," said Andanar.

He added, "While the government is doing its part, we urge the residents and individuals in the affected areas to stay safe and remain vigilant of possible aftershocks; and to report to the authorities unsafe damaged structures."
