THE Department of Health (DOH) Davao urged couples who will be celebrating Valentine’s Day Friday, February 14, to “spread love, not germs” by avoiding close contact especially if the partner is sick in the wake of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) outbreak.

DOH Davao director Dr. Annabelle Yumang said Thursday, February 13, that to “spread love, not germs”, one can do this by washing hands more often and practice proper hygiene. Amid the emerging global threat to health, she added that as much as possible “avoid close contact when you or someone you know is sick.”

Health officials called on the public to observe preventive measures, such as proper handwashing, practicing cough etiquette, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prevent infection due to Covid-19 caused by a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Those who are not feeling well are advised to wear masks to avoid infecting others.

The health department has discouraged shaking hands and cheek kissing (beso-beso) for the meantime. There is no treatment yet for the disease that claimed the lives of over a thousand individuals although a vaccine is being developed.

Couples are likewise advised to observe safe sex to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies through abstaining from sex, use of protection like condoms, and to be mutually faithful.

She also reminded the public to keep heart healthy by preventing and controlling high blood, high cholesterol and diabetes; avoid smoking; limit alcohol intake; and be active and eat healthy.

On the other hand, the Davao City Police Office assured the safety in areas of convergence where lovers will celebrate the love season.

She added that the Women and Children Protection Desks officers were also alerted to address complaints in connection with the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act.
