Asuncion, Catayas top youth chessfest

GINO Angelo Asuncion toppled Jerson Pantalita in a duel of fancied bets in the sixth and final round to capture the 19 years old and below crown in the 2nd Dr. Marlonsky Youth Chess Cup Tournament held at the Dr. Marlonsky Chess Center, Catalya Compound, Purok 5A, Kilometer 20, Barangay Los Amigos, Tugbok District in Davao City last Sunday, October 7.

Asuncion put on a strong start and a stronger finish with 5.5 points to go home with P3,000.

Meanwhile, James Catayas bested Giant Luis Navalta in the tiebreak points to rule the 11 years old and below event.

Hareve James Sumatra, meanwhile, defeated Kurt John Placencia to create a two-way tie for second place with fellow five pointer Ryan Gabriel Rasay, who brought down Wesley Jovan Magbanua.

Sumatra took the runner-up prize of P2,000 with a superior tiebreak score against third placer Pasay who got P1,000.

The one day Rapid event was organized by General Surgeon Dr. Marlon Lepiten Sayson Jr., backed up by Mindanao Chessmastes and Knights of the Square Table, and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
