Macala, Magbanua share top honors

ALLAN Macala, Wesley Jovan Magbanua and Caerel Shane Mantilla shared top honors at the close of the Damosa Land Inc. Chess Challenge held last November 19 at the Damosa Market Basket in Lanang, Davao City.

Macala earned a total of four points in the five-round Swiss System Format chessfest to annex the division A (21 years old and above) title over 3.5-pointers Jay Bulicatin and Irwin Aton who placed second and third, respectively.

Magbanua, for his part, crowned himself division B (13-20 years old) champion with perfect five points. He outclassed Gino Angelo Asuncion and Irish Yngayo who grabbed the next two places.

Mantilla, meanwhile, edged fellow-4.5 pointer Jerome Pullos via superior tie-break to romp away with the division C (12-below) title in the event that attracted some 80 participants from Cotabato, General Santos, Mati, Tagum and Davao cities.
